Question

Display only current and future items from SQL table to grid

Asked by: Buhrj1

I would like to display only the items that are current and within the next 60 days, or future dates. I currently have it selecting everything starting from 1/1/2009. I'm pulling from a SQL database using VS2005.

So basically want DefaultValue="<%DateTime.Now.ToString() % + (60)>"  ?????

SelectCommand="SELECT [ID], [Subject], [Start], [End], [RecurrenceRule], [RecurrenceParentID] FROM [AppointmentsWithLongSubjects] WHERE ([Start] >= @Start)"

<SelectParameters>
      <asp:Parameter DbType="DateTime" DefaultValue="1/1/2009" Name="Start" />
</SelectParameters>

An equal sign was missing from DanielWilson's suggestion:

DefaultValue="<%= DateTime.Today.Date.AddDays(60)%>"

*sigh* Got it.  Same thing happened to me when I was using a UserControl in ASP.NET 1.1.  Some controls instantiate the parameters given to them BEFORE ASP.NET processes inline server code.

Here's what you do:  in your Page_Load event, you're going to have to add SelectParameters yourself to the SelectCommand.  Do you need help in doing this?

by: Buhrj1Posted on 2009-08-10 at 17:10:38ID: 25065278

Some help would be great. Also, this is a RadGrid that I'm using.

Thanks!

by: cpkilekofpPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:19:25ID: 25070058

Is the SelectCommand part of the initialization of the RadGrid?  If so, could you please send the whole RadGrid HTML with SelectCommand intii8alization to us in a Code Snippet?  Since the RadGrid is an AJAX control, I suspect some I-know-not-what problem in when the server code is being invoked, and since I don't know what it is but suspect it's there, I probably won't find it unless I see the entire context in which the SelectCommand is defined.

I'm new to RadGrids, I'm not sure but think so.
My goal is to display only the current and future calendar items in the RadGrid1 which uses the SQLDataSouce2.  I kept the <%=DateTime.Today.Date.AddDays(60)%> in the parameter I'm trying to use for the Start parameters in the ASPX code . I'm not sure how to get the SelectCommand in the code behind.

Attached is the entire code.

Here is the entire code:

Try adding this:

    protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        SQLDataSource2.SelectParameters.Add("Start", System.Data.DbType.DateTime, DateTime.Today.AddDays(60).ToShortDateString());
    }

Also, remove the HTML defining SelectParameters for SQLDataSource2.

So very close!!  This is great, that was most helpful. It doesn't work with the "AddDays(60)"; with this it doesn't display anything, but when I remove the "AddDays(60)" it shows the current and future events.

any ideas?

Change your SelectCommand for SQLDataSource2 to this:

SelectCommand="SELECT [ID], [Subject], [Start], [End], [RecurrenceRule], [RecurrenceParentID] FROM [AppointmentsWithLongSubjects] WHERE ([Start] >= @Start AND [Start] <= @Finish)"

Then change your codebehind to this:

    protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        SQLDataSource2.SelectParameters.Add("Start", System.Data.DbType.DateTime, DateTime.Today.ToShortDateString());
        SQLDataSource2.SelectParameters.Add("Finish", System.Data.DbType.DateTime, DateTime.Today.AddDays(60).ToShortDateString());
    }

Fantastic!  I have much to learn.
Thanks for your help!

Indeed :) I have 31 years of experience as a professional programmer, the last five of which I've used .NET, and I've only run into this twice, maybe three times.  With ASP.NET, controls may be instantiated before the .ASPX has been processed to convert server value references, so that (as you've observed) the text of the server value reference is returned rather than the value represented.  When the syntax of the reference is validated as correct in the server environment, and the value is known to be correct for its data type, my first rule of thumb is to initialize the value from the server by modifiying the control on the server side directly then see if I still have a problem.

One other thing on this one. I noticed when I refresh using the RadGrid by using the Master TableView properties and adding the CommandItemDisplay to the Top, which displays a Resfresh button; I get the foillowing error in the code snippet:

I'd prefer to have the RadGrid auto refresh from the Scheduler or even on a page refresh.

This is a new question, but ties into the previous one.

If you have these lines still in the definition of SQLDataSource2, you should remove them.

                   <SelectParameters>
                        <asp:Parameter DbType="DateTime" DefaultValue="<%=DateTime.Today.Date.AddDays(60)%>" Name="Start" />
                    </SelectParameters>

by: Buhrj1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 09:18:13ID: 25080225

I do not have the select parameters.
I added a clear in the page load and now the refresh button works in the RadGrid, but the page refresh nor the auto refresh work. Must need to bind somehow?

 SqlDataSource2.SelectParameters.Clear();
        SqlDataSource2.SelectParameters.Add("Start", System.Data.DbType.DateTime, DateTime.Today.ToShortDateString());
        SqlDataSource2.SelectParameters.Add("Finish", System.Data.DbType.DateTime, DateTime.Today.AddDays(60).ToShortDateString());

In your Page_load function, add

this.DataBind();

as the last line.  This should ensure proper data binding on page refresh.

RadScheduler does some strange things. This works on the grid, but then adds a double entry on the RadScheduler calendar view. It then disables the RadScheduler controls for adding and deleting new items. untill I reopen the browser.

by: cpkilekofpPosted on 2009-08-12 at 15:19:00ID: 25083662

I know nothing of RadScheduler, sorry.

That's cool, I (or you) got the most important part working.

Thanks again for your help, I'm starting to understand how things are working with these controls. You got me started in the right direction.

This is closed!!!

Have a great day!
