That is helpful, thank you. But what has worked after 2 days of trying different things is removing IIS from my Windows 7 installation and then installing it with only the bare minimum options to run. I had previously ticked every item in all the IIS boxes for Windows 7 - which seems to be the problem.
Thanks very much - changing to 32 bit is definitely part of the solution though.

The first thing that comes to mind is to ask if VS is a 32 or 64 bit app.

I don't know if this will make a difference but it might.

You can configure IIS to run its application pools in 32 bit mode (or support 32 bit mode operations, I don't remember exactly now). This might get it working if you are running a 32 bit VS app.
