About substr() in C ...

I know that the string class in C++ includes substr() function. How can we write the same code in C? for example:
char query[]="select * from student1 where name = 'Tom'
INTERSECT
select * from student2 where name = 'Tom';"

How can we get query1[]="select * from student1 where name = 'Tom';"(includes a semicolon), query2[]="select * from student2 where name = 'Tom'", and then do INTERSECT in C code?
