how to run c programs on linux?

How can i compile and run a c and c++ source code in linux mandrake 10.1?When i compile the program with gcc ,it compiled successfully and it creates default a.out file but when i type a.out and hit enter it shows that command not found.Did i not compile well or any thing else?Start Free Trial
