How much memory "new" really cost ?

I am building an application envolving a very very big suffix tree
(O(10^6-10^8) tree nodes)
every node in tree contains integers and pointers
that sum up to be 36 bytes.

when one allocate memory, I guess a entry is being made "in the backround".
looking at total memory lost over 10000 allocations, I learned
that a node really cost me 47.8 bytes.

is there a limitation on the number of entries (allocations) one can do ?
can one control it / optimize it ?

Working on SGM's Irix OS's.
