converting/adding ints to strings

Fairly new to c++, I'm trying to build up a string from single digit integers. Things like

string nibble;
nibble += 3;

error, which I expected, but after hours of looking for a solution the nearest thing I could find was something to do with sstreams and

sstream cheese;
cheese << 37;
cheese >> nibble;

but then a cout << nibble would just print a blank line
(my << and >> may be the wrong way round in the example, just my attempt to convey what I'd seen).

Basically I want to end up with a string that should look like:

"28473874837"

adding each number at a time, from int values.
