Fastest method to serialize and deserialize standard types?

What is the fastest method to serialize and deserialize standard types in a c++ ish way?

I came up with this:

void intToString( int integer, string& str )
{
str.assign( static_cast<char*>(&integer), sizeof(int) );

return;
}

int stringToInt( string& str )
{
return *(reinterpret_cast<int*>(&str[0]));
}

I wouldn't mind seeing an alternative competing c version.

Can anyone beat the performance of the above code? Or see anything inherently wrong?
