C++ static class members

In C++ you can't have a data member of a class same as the class type. For example following is illegal: -

class A
{
public:
A a;// Illegal
};

But above rule is true only for non-static variables. The rule behind that is that you can't have an object of a class unless the definition of the class has been seen. In above case the class definition is yet not over when we do "A a;"(ignore quotes they are just for increasing the readability).

My question is how come static objects are allowed?
For example :-
class A
{
public:
static A a;//Legal
};
Even if somehow it is legal, how does an object of such a class look like and serves what purpose?? Any practical example??
