The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not?   • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Best timer accurary possible under windows + usage

Hello All!

I am programming in C++ under Borland Builder (but the problem is not related specifically to it) and I want, quite top level view, to do a sort of serial communication @9600bit/s (it is not normalized) on a pin of the parallel port. Parallel port is ok but now I need a precise timer (let's say about 1us) in order to be to manage by soft the protocol I want to put in place on this ltp port.
I have read here http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Platforms/Linux_Programming/Q_20925238.html that RDTSC could be the solution.
So 1st is it the right solution for my concern (=good accuracy and quite easy to use).
Second, as explain in the thread linked, to do a sort of delay function with microseconds input (= delay (50us) for example), I need to poll rdtsc() until I reach the number I want (determined by other trick related to processor frequency). I presume it will load a lot the CPU (near 100%?) during that time...Is there a solution to avoid that?
