Can I used icmp programming to determine broadband connection speed? If so, can I have the sample or working code? Thanks.

Not likely to work very well.  ICMP packets are very small so any speed test is going to be very inaccurate, the speed is going to be overshadowed by the delays in echoing each packet.

Also most broadband connections are very asymettric-- about 80% to 90% of the bandwidth is devoted to download direction, only the smaller other bit to upload, so any number you get is going to be swamped by the slow direction.

I'd instead try timing downloading a biggish file, say a megabyte or so, from some well-connected web site.

ICMP packets can be any size you want.; in fact, one way to do a DOS attack on a server is to bombard it with extremely large ping packets.

Here's an article on what Microsoft does to determine "fast" and "slow" links: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;227260 . You could do something similar to determine the link speed.

There's plenty of sample code around for sending ICMP packets, just search around a little. For example, here: http://www.sockaddr.com/ExampleSourceCode.html

grg99's point about the asymmetric nature of broadband connections is well taken, however. An average taken this way will be skewed by the slow uplink speed. For example, with an upload speed of 350 kbps and a download of 3500 kbps, using icmp packets will give an average speed of only around 600 kbps.

Oh, right, I was thinking of the ICMP error packets, which *are* quite small.
