Question

Building Scintilla - BaseTsd.h doesn't exist

Asked by: pD_EO

Hey guys,

I'm trying to build Scintilla, I have download the files from the website, extracted it, opened the read me file which tells me too make the file...

*** Windows version ***

A C++ compiler is required. Visual Studio .NET 2003 is the development system
used for most development although Mingw32 3.1 and Borland C++ are also
supported.
For older versions of Borland make such as version 5.02, add the -l option.

To build Scintilla, make in the scintilla/win32 directory
            cd scintilla\win32
GCC:            mingw32-make
VS .NET:      nmake -f scintilla.mak
VC++ 6:      nmake -f scintilla_vc6.mak
Borland:       make -fscintilla.mak
            cd ..\..

I opened the Visual Studio Command Prompt, navigated to the scintilla/win32 directory as specified.  I entered...

nmake -f scintilla.mak

...but I just get errors, I can't seem to build it.

The errors I get are...

cl -Zi -TP -W4 -Zc:forScope -Zc:wchar_t -D_CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE=1 -O1 -MT -DNDEBUG
-GL -I../include -I../src -c -Fo.\CallTip.obj ..\src\CallTip.cxx
Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 14.00.50727.762 for 80x86

CallTip.cxx
C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Desktop\scintilla\include\Scintilla.h(29) : fatal error C1083:
Cannot open include file: 'BaseTsd.h': No such file or directory
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: '"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\BIN\cl.EXE"' : return code '0x2'
Stop.

I had a look for BaseTsd.h on the drive, but it doesn't exist.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Make sure to execute the 'vcvars32.bat' from VC++'s 'bin' directory before calling 'nmake', this one is needed to set up your environment variables.

Hi,

Thanks for a quick response.

I done as you suggested.  After that, I went and tried again to build scintilla, but I continue to get the same errors as posted above.

Not sure what else to do.

Cheers

Did you execute that in the same console window? These settings are onlx valid in the console you set them in, so double-clicking on that .bat file in explorer won't help you much.

by: pD_EOPosted on 2007-02-18 at 10:18:57ID: 18559167

I double clicked, opened it in windows command, and tried in the visual studio command.  Still the same problem.

:)

I'd rather call it from the command prompr like

[PATH]\vcvars32.bat
nmake -f scintilla.mak

Also, have you checked which directory BaseTsd.h resides in?

by: jkrPosted on 2007-02-18 at 10:38:56ID: 18559224

BTW, what happens if you use

set INCLUDE=%INCLUDE%;"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\Include"
nmake -f scintilla.mak

?

I have search the drive for that file, it doesn't exist.

I have tried running the bat file again, I get the same response as the previous times I ran it...

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\bin>"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools\vsvars32.bat"
Setting environment for using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 x86 tools.

Tried making it again, same errors.

by: pD_EOPosted on 2007-02-18 at 10:46:20ID: 18559245

Same error about the BaseTsd.h file being missing.

by: jkrPosted on 2007-02-18 at 11:12:15ID: 18559304

That's odd, it should definitely be there: http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=BaseTsd.h&l=en&OtherSite=&mkt=en-US&FORM=QBMA

You could try to update your Platform SDK, just in case that file was accidentially removed. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A55B6B43-E24F-4EA3-A93E-40C0EC4F68E5&displaylang=en

by: pD_EOPosted on 2007-02-18 at 11:18:46ID: 18559326

I already downloaded the latest Platform SDK, but still can't find that file anywhere.

Should I uninstall Visual Studio and download it again?

Which version of Visual Studio do you have?

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition

by: jkrPosted on 2007-02-18 at 11:29:17ID: 18559362

Uh oh, that might be the problem. In that case, take a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualc/usingpsdk/ ("Using Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition with the Microsoft Platform SDK") on how to use the PSDK with that edition.

by: pD_EOPosted on 2007-02-18 at 11:56:25ID: 18559439

Ok, I done a repair anyway, that didn't solve it.  I then followed the instructions on that page you provided, and then had another go at making the file but get the same error.

I think it's probably time to give up on it, lol.

I done a full search of the hard drive for that file again, still nothing.

by: pD_EOPosted on 2007-02-18 at 13:20:36ID: 18559789

I give up on it, thanks for your help :D

by: jkrPosted on 2007-02-18 at 13:25:52ID: 18559812

Thanks - I've run out of ideas also. The only thing that was left would have been posting the contents of the file, but that would be quite against any rules...
