The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

unsigned int CFuturesInstrument::GetContractDateForInstrument( CInstrument* instrument )
{

      char              symbol[32];
      char              buffer[5];
      char*             monthPtr;
      int                     year;
      int                     month;
      unsigned int      contractDate = 0;
      int                     symbolLength;

      // Get the symbol.
      instrument->GetSymbol( symbol );

      // Get the date length.
      symbolLength = strlen( symbol );

      // Check to see if the symbol is an index, if so then return NULL as
      // we dont need to bother with the contract dates.
      if ( strstr( INDEX, &symbol[symbolLength - 1] ) )
            return NULL;

      // Make sure that this symbol is of the correct format.
      if ( symbolLength == 8 )
            {

            // First get the year.
            strncpy( buffer, &symbol[5], 2 );
            buffer[2] = '\0';
            year = atoi( buffer );
            // Convert the year to a real century.

            if ( year < 25 )
                  year += 2000;
            else
                  year += 1900;

            // Next get the month
            strncpy( buffer, &symbol[7], 1 );
            buffer[1] = '\0';
            monthPtr = strstr( VALID_TRADING_MONTHS, buffer );   //<---****** Error HERE *********
            month = monthPtr - VALID_TRADING_MONTHS + 1;

            // Put it all together.
            contractDate = year * 65536 + month * 256 + 1;
            }

      // Return the date.
      return contractDate;
}

Looks like the strstr() function wants const chars passed to it.

Just make that
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
            monthPtr = strstr( const_cast<char*>(VALID_TRADING_MONTHS), buffer );

// or

            monthPtr = strstr((char*)VALID_TRADING_MONTHS, buffer );

Hey!
Do you ever sleep.  ;)

I did the later the regular cast but is that dangerous?  It seems to work.

Both are OK, the latter one is just more "C-style" (I still use that when I am sure about what I'm doing, which is definitely the case here)

And yes, I am planning to go to bed soon. Yet an Asus EEE is such a nice new toy and I have been so neglecting about my Linux skills recently, it is just fun to see Ubuntu boot from an USB stick *g* (mental notice - change that to booting from a SD flash drive, that's less bulky...)
