Question

Problem with WinHttpSendRequest

Asked by: harish_dixit1

Hi ,

I want to post one 3gp video file to the web server. The name of the video file is in chinese characters.
i am using following method call to do it:

bool bOK = WinHttpSendRequest(GetHandle(),
            bstrHeaders, bstrHeaders.length(),
            (void*)m_requestBody, m_requestBody.GetSize(),
            m_requestBody.GetSize(),
            (DWORD_PTR)this);

where bstrHeaders is the _bstr_t param.  )m_requestBody pointer contains the binary data of video file.

But when i post it then return value comes as false and Win error is: ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER.

Below is the value of header:

Slug: gr.3gp
Authorization: WSSE profile="UsernameToken"
X-WSSE: UsernameToken Username="ik_test", PasswordDigest="d4koksdiAAHQAxUg+9A5MJhBkIY=", Nonce="KJHYTG9tLLP09TYxODE4ZmNiMWNjNjMzMWY4DjBmZjksNTzssss3w", Created="2009-07-30T05:56:16Z"
Content-Type: video/3gp; charset=utf-8

One IMPORTANT thing is that when i rename chinese file name to english then file posted successfully.
My application used Unicode char set.

Please help me to resolve it.

Is it the correct Zone for this question?

by: jkrPosted on 2009-07-30 at 09:58:49ID: 24981881

Are you sure about the 6th parameter? IMO that one should be 'bstrHeaders.length() + m_requestBody.GetSize()', since the docs for 'WinHttpSendRequest()' (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384110(VS.85).aspx) describe that as

"dwTotalLength [in]
An unsigned long integer value that contains the length, in bytes, of the total data sent. This parameter specifies the Content-Length header of the request."

by: Gideon7Posted on 2009-07-30 at 13:12:58ID: 24983957

No.  RFC 2068 says that Content-Length is the length of the message-body, i.e., all data following the headers.  The 5th and 6th parameters should be the same.

Did you remember to specify the byte length (not the character length) for parameters 5 and 6?   Parameter 2 is measured in characters but parameters 5 and 6 are measured in bytes.

Your Content-Type is utf-8.  Did you remember to first encode m_requestBody in UTF-8?

You need to systematically modify your program to determine which parameter is bad.  First try WinHttpSendRequest(GetHandle(), WINHTTP_NO_ADDITIONAL_HEADERS, 0, WINHTTP_NO_REQUEST_DATA, 0, 0, 0).  If that works, then add the headers.  If that works, then add the request body.  Keep adding parameters until you find the bad one.

Good luck!

Thanks.

For header information i am using _bstr_t and for length i m calling its .length method. So it will always be in characters. For post request body i am using byte buffer which i populated from file reading. So its length i am passing as bytes length.

One concern as u mentioned, how can i encode the files (say some image file)  binary data to UTF8 data.
Can u plz help me here.

Use WideCharToMultiByte(CP_UTF8,...)

by: Gideon7Posted on 2009-07-31 at 07:08:55ID: 24988899

Binary data should not be encoded in UTF8.  There are some codepoints in UCS that are invalid (such as U+FFFF) and won't encode property in UTF8.

Since you are transferring binary data you can use a neutral character set such as "Windows-1252".   In this case don't call WideCharToMultiByte;  simply transmit the message body as-is.

I am reading the image file in byte array and assigning it to m_requestBody. And i am directly passing it as parameter in WinHttpSendRequest API. It means no need to change anything there?

by: harish_dixit1Posted on 2009-08-02 at 21:59:19ID: 25001949

Moreover i tried all the options as u mentioned previously. I tried to pass total length as header + content. And as well as only content length as 2nd last param. But nothing worked.

I also tried WinHttpSendRequest(GetHandle(), WINHTTP_NO_ADDITIONAL_HEADERS, 0, WINHTTP_NO_REQUEST_DATA, 0, 0, 0) and passing params in stages. But it failed when i post that file which is having chinese name.

I also tried to add content+length and transfer encoding in header but it also didnt work.

Try renaming the file?

by: harish_dixit1Posted on 2009-08-03 at 01:36:17ID: 25002643

Yes as i told previosuly if i rename the file to english name then it works fine.

by: Gideon7Posted on 2009-08-03 at 05:46:47ID: 25003819

The file name has nothing to do with WinHttpSendRequest.  Tgat is a problem with the initial PUT that contains the file name.   The problem is actually with WinHttpOpenRequest (pwszObjectName).

A PUT request sends the file name to the server encoded in a URI.  Per RFC 1808 and RFC 2396, encodings outside of US-ASCII (7-bit) are not standard.  You cannot expect a Chinese file name to work in a PUT (or GET) request reliably.  A webserver might accept it, but it is not required by HTTP 1.1.

You need to use English characters to conform to HTTP 1.1.

by: harish_dixit1Posted on 2009-08-03 at 23:19:43ID: 25011003

But i am using "POST" verb for posting the image file to the web server using HTTP.
And i am passing additional header which u can see in my posted question and the file's binary data as parameters. Moreover while opening the HTTP request i m calling OpenRequest(strVerb, strUrl); method. Where i am passing "POST" as first param and URL of web server as 2nd param. I am not passing any file name here.

Additional header:
Slug: glº.3gp
Authorization: WSSE profile="UsernameToken"
X-WSSE: UsernameToken Username="ik_test", PasswordDigest="d4koksdiAAHQAxUg+9A5MJhBkIY=", Nonce="KJHYTG9tLLP09TYxODE4ZmNiMWNjNjMzMWY4DjBmZjksNTzssss3w", Created="2009-07-30T05:56:16Z"
Content-Type: video/3gp; charset=utf-8

As u can see if Slag tag contians chinese characer then WinHttpSendRequest returns invalid parameter error. Otherwise it works for all files. If u will see chinese character are only present in the header at one place only nowhere else. If i just rename the same file to english characters then it posted successfully.

Do u mean to say that i should do some kind of encoding in the header part?

by: Gideon7Posted on 2009-08-04 at 10:38:58ID: 25016164

The Content-Type only applies to the message body, not to the header fields.

You can try using RFC 1522 encoding (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1522.html)

Slug: =?iso-2022-cn?q?glo.3gp?=

I'm not sure if all web servers support it.  Proxy servers may try to re-write it.

If that does not work you are stuck with US-ASCII 7-bit.
