well it's actually at this line:

ostream &operator<<(ostream& output, const PolyClass &p);

I have that line on my .h file.. and it gives me this error:

polynomial.h:49: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âostreamâ with no type

oh I got it... just one question, when overloading the << should I declare it as a member or as a non-member?

You can do both, I'd rather choose the member approach, though.

Yes, but PolyClass is explcitly '*this', so that makes not much of a difference. Again, it would be helpful if you posted the header file.

What? You can't declare << operator as a member because its left operand is ostream not the class itself.

looks like Let Me Be has an objection here, I was thinking of the same thing too.... I think << operator can't be declared as members... and that's what I did...
