Overload delete operators

I simply want to overload delete and delete[] to set the pointer to 0 on completion. I want this for the base delete (not a class method). How can this be done?

You want to overload or shadow it? Overloading means adding support for new types, the operator doesn't support yet.

I wouldn't even think of overloading, a simple #define will do:

#define DEL(x) { delete x; x = NULL;}
#define VDEL(x) { delete [] x; x = NULL;}

Actually, this is not such a good idea because the pointer being passed to delete isn't necessarily going to be an lvalue (in other words the pointer can be immutable!).

Overloading delete and its array equivalent has to be done only if absolutely necessary assuming that this is not an academic assignment.
