Question

Need to add a specific XML child Node to the Body of SOAP Header - .NET C# Web Service

Asked by: mandalorian4

I need to add an Element to the Body of My SOAP Header.

I have a routine in a .NET 2.0 web service (C#) like so:

Code: ( text )
[WebMethod]
public string CreatePurchaseOrder(string ProcessPurchaseOrderBOD)
{

      //Do my Thing

      return MyString; (String is an XML string)
}

This method routines a string in this SOAP Envelope:

***** Start Envelope **************

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<soap12:Envelope xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:soap12="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope">
<soap12:Header>
</soap12:Header>
<soap12:Body>
<CreatePurchaseOrderResponse xmlns="http://www.aftermarket.org/InternetPartsOrder">
<CreatePurchaseOrderResult>MyString</CreatePurchaseOrderResult>
</CreatePurchaseOrderResponse>
</soap12:Body>
</soap12:Envelope>

*********** End Envelope **************

I need to add a custom node called <ConfirmBOD> as a Childe node of the <CreatePurchaseOrderResult> node in  the SOAP Body. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am curious why you need to do this?

Bob,

I do not WANT to, I am being required to.  A brief history: This service is being developed for one of my Clients, my client needs to exchange data with BMW.  The service works great but BMW is claiming they cannot "read" the contents of the SOAP Envelop (the XMl String returned) and they believe it is because I am not including the XMLNode <ConfirmBOD> as a child node of the <CreatePurchaseOrderResult> node.  I am at a loss.  Any Advice?

by: TheLearnedOnePosted on 2007-06-25 at 08:25:59ID: 19356437

1) What type of web service is BMW using?

2) How does 'ConfirmBOD' relate to 'CreatePurchaseOrderResult'?

3) I believe that this might be helpful for you:

After you define the headers, the next step is to associate them with the actual Web service method.

Bob,

A ConfirmBOD is the actual name of the object that is the "CreatePurchaseOrderResult".  Although I return a string - I suppose I could create an Object called ConfirmBOD - but that would be a custom .NET object and would breal the whole Idea of web services.  I tried the example you sited before, thank you for including it. But that only adds tags to the SOAP Header section, if you look at my SOAP Envelope, I need to nest the node directly under the CreatePurchaseOrderResult node.
Thanks,
Chris

How so?  You can marshal business objects through web services.

Bob,

I am using .NET 2.0.  I believe BMW is on a J2EE platform.  I am wrong to assume a .NET object names ConfirmBOD would not translate into Java?

by: TheLearnedOnePosted on 2007-06-25 at 11:38:26ID: 19357986

Web services should be web services, but I have had soooo many problems with integrating with Java web services from ASP.NET.  You need to get the correct SOAP envelope, and in this case, I am not sure exactly how to get that, other than defining a ConfirmBOD object.

I have a few questions:

Are you using their WSDL?
If so, does it show a <ConfirmBOD> child?
If there's no <ConfirmBOD> child in the WSDL then they need to add it and your .NET program should fix itself (in theory and assuming you're using their WSDL).

Are they expecting any data inside the <ConfirmBOD> child?

What order does it need to be in? (before or after the <CreatePurchaseOrderResult> child?)

I just reread what you posted here:

QUOTE::::::::::::::::::::::
A ConfirmBOD is the actual name of the object that is the "CreatePurchaseOrderResult".
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

What if you just changed the <CreatePurchaseOrderResult> to <ConfirmBOD> like this:

***** Start Envelope **************

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<soap12:Envelope xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:soap12="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope">
<soap12:Header>
</soap12:Header>
<soap12:Body>
<CreatePurchaseOrderResponse xmlns="http://www.aftermarket.org/InternetPartsOrder">
<ConfirmBOD>MyString</ConfirmBOD>
</CreatePurchaseOrderResponse>
</soap12:Body>
</soap12:Envelope>

*********** End Envelope **************

I have found a solution to this issue.

Their WSDL indicates that the return value is simply a string, so initiatlly I did not use their WSDL for anything more then reference.

The solution involved several steps:
1.) Use WSDL.exe with the /SL switch to create an Interface class
2.) Implemenet this interface in my source code - this was the key, my routine could no longer return a string it had to return a "IPOSellerConfirmResponse" object with a field called ConfirmBOD.
3.) This added the necessary ConfirmBOD tag to the SOAP Envelope

Thank you all for your help.  Is it possible to have my points refunded?

Chris
