Question

Combobox Autocomplete

Asked by: jazduck

Hey guys,

Writing in C# 2.0, trying to find an easy way to code a combobox to work with an instring autocomplete. The default autocomplete modes (Suggest and/or Append) only work if the item is typed correctly from the start of the string. I'd like the exact same behavior just for any instance of the entry within the string to be suggest/appended.

Any ideas appreciated, ive been messing with key events on the combobox with some results, but not as smooth as the builtin autocomplete.

Have you tried the ajax toolkit one?

http://ajax.asp.net/ajaxtoolkit/AutoComplete/AutoComplete.aspx

And if you want the dropdownlist, you could use this one:

http://ajax.asp.net/ajaxtoolkit/ListSearch/ListSearch.aspx

Not quite what im after, they're asp.net, I should probably have mentioned that tis a Windows Forms program. Also the functionality isn't quite what im after, it has pretty typical autocomplete behavior, but it doesn't match the entry instring against the list.

An example of the functionality below.

Four
Five
Sour

an entry of "ou" in the combobox would suggest Four and Sour

This is very difficult as the suggestion is drawn based on the collection of the data starting at index 0. However you can try creating your own control that has a combobox and a listbox that simulates the same scenario. Where the listbox is always hidden until text is entered into the combo and string matches are found.

Eg.

If you type in "ou" in your combo it will populate and display the listbox with Four and Sour. You are basically listening to the Key_Up event of the Combo for text matching and also listen to the Key_Down of the combo for when users press the Up/Down cursor in order to traverse through your listbox items. Finally listen to the Enter key event on the listbox to select an item.

Just a suggestion.

Regards,
Ready1

Yeah I had a sinking feeling it was going to be a custom control, been working on it today, using GDI instead of a listbox as the listbox didn't quite look right. It's amazing how much of a controls behavior you take for granted until you have to write it. Going to leave this open for another day or two as I might need some help, but so far so good.
