The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Is it possible to publish COM enumerated type through .NET assembly?

Asked by ccbuilder in C# Programming Language, Assembly Programming Language, DCOM

Hello,

I'm trying find best solution for the following problem. I have a lot of old COM components. Many of them are used in new .NET projects (C#) through automatically generated interops. For some widely used COM components (like logging) I want to create .NET wrapper, that would be referenced from the other .NET projects.
COM object provides some methods. Some parameters are enumerated types, defined in the COM. Let's say we have Log method and one of its parameters is enum Severity. Now, I created .NET class wrapper for the COM. It instantiates and configures the logging object and so on. It has method Log, that calls matching method of the COM object. I need to add Severity as the parameter of that wrapper method.
Problem is, that every project, using the new .NET wrapper has to reference the COM object as well, to get the Severity enumerated type. Otherwise, it can't call the Log method of the C# wrapper.
I would like to have some way to "publish" the enumerated type from COM on the .NET assembly, so that all necessary information are in that assembly and there's no need to reference the COM from other projects. And I don't want to reimplement the enum as new type and do the translation between them.
Is there some way to achieve this? I'm imagining something like an attribute, that would say to .NET: "make this type from the referenced assembly available in this assembly". Or do you see some other way around this problem?

Thanks in advance.Start Free Trial
