Determine if a value exists in a List in C#

I'm trying to determine if a string value exists in a dropdown list. The string that I am comparing against is a string in a record set.

I'm using the following code and getting the error as shown below:

Compiler Error Message: CS0019: Operator '==' cannot be applied to operands of type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListItem' and 'char'

Source Error:

                flag = true;
                if (BillingCountry.Items.FindByText(drcustid["COUNTRY"].ToString().Trim()) == ' ')
                { }
                else

What am I doing wrong ?

does findbytext return a string?

if you put a ToString() outside of the parenthesis the error will go away but that's probably not what you are trying to accomplish

does it return an item? is there a text property on the object? you could put that at the end of the parenthesis for your string match?

I'm not familiar with the return value of FindByText - I do know that the database value of country is a string.

with intellisense you should be able to see what type it returns if anything.

in this you see that String.Concat returns a string

You need to access the Text property to get the "text" within the ListItem. FindByText returns a 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListItem', as you can tell by your error. The problem here is that the == operator doesn't contain an overload for comparing a String to a ListItem like this.

Also, your second problem is a String cannot be compared to a Char for some reason, so you'll have to use " " instead of ' '. It should look similar to this, if I am not mistaken in wht you're looking for.

the text property that internalstatic mentioned was what i was asking about -- and he is most certainly correct about the '' needing to be a ""

change the '' to double quotes ""
