How to passing string to System.Exception

The code below is .NET 3.5.  How do I set the exception message in the following scenario:

public static void Test<T>() where T : System.Exception, new()
{
    T ex = new T();
    //this doesn't work:
    //T ex = new T("You caused an error");
    throw ex;
}

I can't do that since the caller needs to type the exceptions.

If somebody else doesn't answer first I should be able to do figure it out once I'm home.  I believe it is just a case of performing the right cast.

The main problem is that the new() constraint doesn't allow parameters.  However, the message string on System.Exception can only be set through its constructor, which conflicts with the new constraint.
