I have several Windows 2003 servers running a home-grown service and two running SQL 2000. The OSs are patched to SP1 and SQL is patched to SP4.
By intention, Automatic Updates are disabled so why is DCOM attampting to open wuauserv? I get the following error intermittently throughout my system event logs:

DCOM got error "%1058" attempting to start the service wuauserv with arguments ""
in order to run the server:
{E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-D
The error is expected as the service is disabled. My question is what would be calling DCOM to open the service?
Is there some other windows OS component that wants to start the automatic update service? Our developer is the one who initiated the disabling of auto update, so if any of his apps required it, he should know.

It's all one thing:
SUS is the predecessor of WSUS.
Your clients have a GPO that points them to a server that is not enabled. So, the clients are trying to log onto the server using DCOM (Distributive Components) and get their updates.
I have to ask, do you want to operate WSUS or get it running? I find it to be very handy in a domain to get updates. If not, you should disable the GPO that points your clients to a WSUS server and make sure your group policy updates are passed out to your domain computers.

I appologize for leaving this ticket open for so long. I'm no longer working at the place where the problem existed. I've moved on to better pastures. In light of this, I would consider this ticket closed, but not sure how to award points as I was never able to check the results. Maybe Admin can make a ruling?

You can diable the AU class in the Dcomcnfg.exe. Use the following steps
1. From the Start and run Menu, type dcomcnfg
2. Go to the Applications tab and select Automatic updates, click Properties
3. Go to the Location tab
4. Unselect the option Run application on this computer (Figure 2)
5. Click OK twice to save the changes
