Question

DCOM eventid 10016, however the CLSID is not present in the Component Services?

Asked by: Synocus

I get the following error in my system event log of our sharepoint server:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      DCOM
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      10016
Date:            24.8.2009
Time:            23:07:37
User:            SYNOCUS\8moss_sspservice
Computer:      SYNSRV8
Description:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{3D42CCB1-4665-4620-92A3-478F47389230}
to the user SYNOCUS\8moss_sspservice SID (S-1-5-21-1214440339-1979792683-1801674531-5105).  This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I've learned through EventID.net that I should find the corresponding program in the servers DCOM Config. I've manually looked through the list of Application Ids and their matching applications, but I simply cannot find the CLSID mentioned in the eventid in that list. I've doublechecked to make sure.

Please help me find the solution to this problem.

This article I wrote walks you through finding the relevant CLSID in the registry, to find its name.  Then go into DCOM Config and find the object by its friendly name.

You can just google search the CLSID.

It belongs to Sharepoint services:

3D42CCB1-4665-4620-92A3-478F47389230 is for "oSearch" in DCOM Config

by: dreamyguyPosted on 2009-08-27 at 22:50:42ID: 25205205

Hi Synocus, The CLSID {3D42CCB1-4665-4620-92A3-478F47389230} points to the Osearch COM object.

To solve this issue, execute the following steps.

1. go to Start -> Run -> DCOMCNFG and double-click on Component Services.
2. Navigate to Component Services ->Computers->My Computer->DCOM Config
3. Right-click on the OSearch object and select Properties.
4. Next, select the security tab and edit Launch and Activation Permissions.
5. Make sure that the Network Service account is present and that the local launch and local activation rights are granted to it.

Thanks for your input itgroove and dreamyguy.

I checked the CLSID of the Osearch COM object in the DCOM Config. I noticed that it was different from the CLSID mentioned in the error in the eventlog. However, when I checked for the CLSID in the registry, it turned up that under the 3D42CCB1-4665-4620-92A3-478F47389230 CLSID, it had as specified AppID the other CLSID that the Osearch COM object reports that it is using.

Thanks for your input. I expect the problem to go away now.

Thanks for the update, Synocus. Glad that the issue has been resolved.
