How to generate word documents dynamically from java

I have a java web application and from it wish to dynamically generate word documents populated with snippets of data read from the database. Ideally I would like to have the ability to dynamically generate tables that have variable numbers of columns according to data available in database. What is the best solution bearing in mind that I looking for a cost-effective, ideally free approach?

If Java can use COM (OLE Automation) then it should be possible.

If you know how to do that and can read (if not write) Visual Basic then we could help with the details.
