Question

Passing custom Session variables around the spring controllers

Asked by: radsa

Hi

I have a class called Session, which in turn has references to the manager classes of the application, like user manager. This Session class is only for that session. And it gets instantiated after the user logs in. I instantiate this class in the login validator. Now how and where should i set the Session class so it is passed around the differenct controllers.

Any inputs are appreciated.
Thanks

and my controllers have the session variable with the getters and setters

by: elkhawajahPosted on 2009-10-19 at 12:13:16ID: 25608062

What exactly the problem you are facing? is the session not set when you try to use in the controller?
have you debugged the code to see whether the session setter of the controller is executed when you run the application?

by: objectsPosted on 2009-10-19 at 14:41:16ID: 25609298

store the Session bean in the http session, that way it can be accessed from any controller

>  And it gets instantiated after the user logs in.

That contradicts what is in your servlet.xml, which shows you create a single instance at startup.

HttpSession session = request.getSession();
session.setAttribute("UserName", "Sathish");

or
session.setAttribute("userName", urserviceMethod.getDescription());

 urserviceMethod.getDescription() like u can get from DB....

if u set like this means  u can get userNmae anywhere (JSp also u can get )
request.getSession().getAttribute("UserName");

Hi

I used request.getSession().setAttribute("userSession", session);

But after a few minutes the session becomes null, how long is a session active, in other words, when does it get expired.

Thanks.

by: dravidnsrPosted on 2009-10-20 at 09:28:46ID: 25615773

The session will expire only when ur set the session is invalidated otherwise it wont.....

i think u set the session value again... that value is null so that only it return null....

if ur logout means the session will expire also !!

by: radsaPosted on 2009-10-20 at 11:35:58ID: 25617070

no i didnt do anything of such sort, it works fine for a while but after say 10 min, it throws the error
when i debug then, i see the session variable is null

Session session = (Session) WebUtils.getSessionAttribute(request, "userSession");

by: objectsPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:04:45ID: 25619137

you still haven't posted where you actually add it to the session

by: radsaPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:20:59ID: 25619254

At the time of log in and if the login is correct, i create a new custom Session variable and set it in the request session.

 Session session = new Session();
            session.setLoginCredentials(credentials);
            request.getSession().setAttribute("userSession", session);

by: objectsPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:28:02ID: 25619293

sounds like your session is expiring.

by: radsaPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:38:51ID: 25619358

I am only initiating in the login controller and am not setting it to null anywhere, how does it expire

by: objectsPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:41:45ID: 25619381

the container typically times it out after a period

by: radsaPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:43:37ID: 25619395

is it configurable, if not how many minutes it keeps it active

by: objectsPosted on 2009-10-20 at 15:56:28ID: 25619487

its generally configurable, depending on what container you are using.

by: radsaPosted on 2009-10-20 at 16:23:09ID: 31642997

Thank you, i am using Tomcat and it is set to 30 min by default
