Question

Opening and editing files

Asked by: asdflkjadsf

I need a script that can open and close files via jsp.

I have a directory called /tmp/stats that have many text files (.txt) that I want to open, edit and then save back to that directory.

Is it possible to create a script, which a user can select which files he wants and open, edit and save the file back to the same directory?

I have gotten this far however I need to be able to pick the file via the broswer.  Not a static file.

I.e. If there a three files in the directory...I want to be able to choos which file I want to edit via the broswer.

A working solution would be good.

So you are saying, you have some client accessing your server which supports JSP.  And the client is accessing the server via a browser.  Now, you want the client to be able to pick a LOCAL file on his hard drive for the server to then edit?  That is impossible.  It *IS* however possible for the client to select a file, then have this file uploaded to the server for editing, and then have the file sent back to the user for the user to then overwrite his old file if he desired.  To do so, you can see my other thread on how to upload files using JSP and MultipartRequest:

Thanks for the quick reply.

The files that I want to write to are on the server.    Just to make sure were on the same page I'll explain in more detail.

I would like to show a user via the browser what files reside in a directory on my server.  Then I want the user to select the text file he wants to edit via the browser.   After editing the file I would like the user to save the file in the same directory.  Is this possible?

If not, is there a way to populate a text box and save it data to a specified file on the server?

There is an upload button in html that you can use. As you get the data you can upload it.

<html>
<body>

<%@ page import="java.io.*" %>

<form enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post" >
    <input type="file" name="fileToUpload"> <br>
    <input type="submit" value="UpLoad"></form>

<%
    String contentType = request.getContentType();
    System.out.println("Content type is :: " +contentType);
    if ((contentType != null) && (contentType.indexOf("multipart/form-data") >= 0)) {
        DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(request.getInputStream());
        int formDataLength = request.getContentLength();

        byte dataBytes[] = new byte[formDataLength];
        int byteRead = 0;
        int totalBytesRead = 0;
        while (totalBytesRead < formDataLength) {
            byteRead = in.read(dataBytes, totalBytesRead, formDataLength);
            totalBytesRead += byteRead;
        }

        String file = new String(dataBytes);
        String saveFile = file.substring(file.indexOf("filename=\"") + 10);
        saveFile = saveFile.substring(0, saveFile.indexOf("\n"));
        saveFile = saveFile.substring(saveFile.lastIndexOf("\\") + 1,saveFile.indexOf("\""));

        int lastIndex = contentType.lastIndexOf("=");
        String boundary = contentType.substring(lastIndex + 1,contentType.length());

        int pos;
        pos = file.indexOf("filename=\"");
        pos = file.indexOf("\n", pos) + 1;
        pos = file.indexOf("\n", pos) + 1;
        pos = file.indexOf("\n", pos) + 1;

        int boundaryLocation = file.indexOf(boundary, pos) - 4;
        int startPos = ((file.substring(0, pos)).getBytes()).length;
        int endPos = ((file.substring(0, boundaryLocation)).getBytes()).length;

        FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream(saveFile);
        //fileOut.write(dataBytes);
        fileOut.write(dataBytes, startPos, (endPos - startPos));
        fileOut.flush();
        fileOut.close();

        out.println("File saved as " +saveFile);
    }
%>

</body>
</html>

> edit via the browser

Not likely unless it is simply text of html

if it is indeed text, just populate a <select> list in some form with your filenames.  then when the user hits submit, take him to another form with the contents of the file he selected presented in a <textarea> for him to edit.  upon hitting submit, re-write your file with the data sent from the form submission.

If you just want to append to the end of a file, then you could use java.io.FileWriter.
Something like this.
FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(new File("realPathToFile"),true);
fw.write(request.getParameter("textbox"));
fw.close();
