Toolkits that abstract browser differences in instantiating and managing XHR are even more numerous than the number of AJAX tutorial. They range from simple wrappers (e.g., prototype.js) to full-fledged IDEs (e.g., TIBCO General Interface). I've been using DWR (Direct Web Remoting) for about 8 months. If your work is primarily in Java then you might find it interesting.

As for books, I've found Ajax in Action from Manning Press to be quite helpful. It especially is useful in cataloging and describing several different architectural approaches to using Ajax.
