How are pages without extensions being created/read

Asked by polobruce in Java Server Pages (JSP), ColdFusion Application Server, Web Servers

ok so I asked another question about developing a REST application and this question is probably related.  But, here it goes.

I want to develop an application where people can goto

www.mydomain.com/someperson

and the someperson's profile would come up without an extension of .cfm.   How is this done?

If you take a look at Linkedin.com there site is like this and uses tomcat and spring (not familiar with)

example profile

http://www.linkedin.com/in/timsmith

any suggestions would be great!
