What does %.5g mean?

Asked by CharleneS77 in Java Server Pages (JSP)

After looking at some examples and trying to understand them I came across this line in a JavaBean:

result = String.format( "%.5g + %.5g <i>i</i>", var2, var3 );

What does %.5g mean?
