The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Using JSTL 1.0 and JSTL 1.1 at the same time?

Tags: Netbeans, 6.1, The absolute uri: http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
Hi - I'm working on an existing Web Application and have no control over the structure. I'm getting an error in the Netbeans IDE stating 'The absolute uri: http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application' . There are no errors in the compiled code, but I'd like to get code completion and get rid of the red squigglies if possible.

I believe based on the taglib declarations (below) that the issue could be that the original developers are using / referencing both JSTL 1.0 and JSTL 1.x based on the URI's. ONLY the /jstl'functions declaration is giving me the problem.

Is there a way to reference / include both to resolve this? Any ideas?

Thanks - b

Functions came with version 1.1 and
><%@ taglib prefix="fn" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions" %>
is the correct syntex. But if you take it out, then can you use <c:  tags without error ?
If so, then that means that  you have the 1.0 jars.  So replace them with the 1.1 jars and also replace
><%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" %>
><%@ taglib prefix="fmt" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/fmt" %>
with
<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="fmt" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/fmt" %>

NetBeans 6.1 has a preinstalled project called  JSTLExamples  did you try that one. It has the 1.1 jars.

Thanks - Still not working right.

Under my project Java sources classpath I removed the 1.0 jstl and standard.jar and then added references to the 1.1 that I copied from program files/netbeans/enterprise5/modules/etc/ to my web-inf/lib. I then changed the taglib uri's to includ the 'jsp' portion.

Changing the URI to include 'jsp' which should be appropriate for this version breaks the reference, changing it back lets it resolve.

What is strange is that the error and behavior is exactly the same, despite changing the jars to what I am CERTAIN are the 1.1 jars.

Any other thoughts - It seems to be some conflict, but I just don't know how to get around it. There are many libraries referenced and as I said it is an existing application. I'm doing a search now through all reference .jar files to ensure that 1.0 isn't somewhere in the classpath - but it doesn't seem to be.

Thank you for your time, I realize this is a common issue and not easy to figure out due to the project configuration.

I don't use NetBeans much. Hopefully an expert will comment.
I would undo what you did to your classpath. You should go to Projects pane. Right click on Libraries on your project tree. On the pop up menu, click on "Add Library..."  In the "Add Library" dialog box scroll down to JSTL 1.1 and click on it. Below the scroll there will appear a "Add Library" button, click on it.
Maybe that will do it.

The project I'm working on is a free - form project based off an existing build script, so that's not an option. From what I understand that just copies the jstl and standard jars into the classpath/web-inf which would be the same as what I have attempted.

Thanks for your time - I'll keep trying things and maybe someone has had this problem will come along and assist.

Version 1.1 is backward compatible. The only change was to the uri s in the taglib directives. So you should be able to fix the problem.   Can you change the build script ?

Strangely enough after a reboot of my machine (not just the IDE) this error was resolved using the 1.1 jars. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but rrz's answer was correct.

Thanks for the effort,
