The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

What are you hoping to use to do this? HTML will be useless since it would already need to have the browser window open and at a page.  JSP is server script so it wouldn't really work unless on the local server.  What is your network set up for intranet or local pages, if any?

Most programming languages, all that I know of, have some option to make an http request.  You can use it in a program file to see if the remote (i.e. Internet) server can be reached.  Let me know what you plan to use to do these steps and I can provide more details or help you get them.

If JSP and a Java server won't be part of this and you will just provide an html page for a default home page then Javascript would be your only option.  Javascript does have an xmlhttp object and would probably be able to do this.  I can provide more details.  It would help to know what browser this will be in and version.  Since this would be a local file the security settings may interfere but we can try, if this is what you need.  From what you described above though it sounds like you want this done outside the browser and a web page (i.e. server or program).

Let me know if you have a question.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in what I wanted to accomplish.  We are using Internet Explorer 7.0 and we are planning or hoping to use JavaScript to accomplish this task.  We are also working with an HTML page.

Its our hope to open Internet explorer, and when the default home page loads it will somehow check to see if the user is online and if they are then it will load an HTML page from the intranet, if they are offline then it will load an HTML page from their local system.

I have search the web like crazy, and tried a number of things but cannot figure it out, so if you can help I would appreciate it !!

Thanks for your help

Thanks for clarifying.  The only way to do this in a browser would be with something like AJAX.  An example of the script to test if the page exists is at http://www.jibbering.com/2002/4/httprequest.2005.8.html (see the "Does a URL exist?" section).  Instead of the alerts you would use window.location to "forward" the browser to the local page or to a web page.  This would have to be run as a local html file.

This isn't the best way to do this in my opinion.  If the computer with the file can run Java then use an applet instead.  An application (which could then open IE after finding out the status) would also be better.  The reason is cross protocol/domain scripting issues and browser security settings.  Even local files are now being limited in what the can do (for security reasons) so doing this in IE in an html page could have problems.

Let me know if you have a question or need more info.
