java + j2ee + String to int

I'm getting a String from request & I'm trying to convert it into int,
by using: Integer.parseInt & Integer.valueOf
I tried by using the above 2 cases
but i'm getting the following prob:
java.lang.NumberFormatException: null
      at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Unknown Source)
      at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Unknown Source)

Are there any other ways to convert a string into an int in java????

you can't convert a string to int, only string representation of a number can be converted to int

for e.g., "12345" can be converted to 12345 but not "12three45" to int

String searchReturnVal = request.getParameter("userId");
The above returning an int, but which is in the form of String...  can I convert it into int....

Integer.parseInt is what you use for converting a string to int but looks like the value returned by request.getParameter("userId");
is not int. can you print this value and see what it returns?

then the value is getting returned as null! make sure the value is set to the request!

add a check if its null

String searchReturnVal = request.getParameter("userId");
int value = (searchReturnVal==null ? -1 : Integer.parseInt(searchReturnVal));
