java in ubuntu 8.04

i have recently installed linux ubuntu 8.04
and its working really fine with me
i like it
i want to use it for development of java applications
i need to know if its pre installed or not
when i type
java -version
in my terminal
this is what i get
please let me know if i have java or not
and which java i have
is it
J2SE?
J2EE?
or only java run time?

and is it the latest?
or i need to upgrade it?
and how?
