New to Java - What books to buy and skills required

Asked by dweppennaar in New to Java Programming, NetBeans IDE

Tags: Java

I have recently started using Java and am enjoying it thouroughly.

I have a background in Visual C# and would like to know which books are good to get me started. I am currently working through Ivor Hortons' Beginning Java with JDK 5. I am doing a masters project this year on software agents and the language is Java. I find NetBeans easier to understand than Eclipse as I am used to Visual Studio.

I would also like to know what skills are required by a competent Java developer. As I am interested in persuing this as a career after finishing my studies. I would just like to get up to speed while still having time during my studies.
