Java 1.1 Applet

I have created an Applet for the eLearning market. You can find it at: www.cbtsystem.com/wt2/xhlp.htm.

This Applet runs fine on my computer (and propably yours too).

The problem is when running on a "low-end" computer with low memory.

The Applet, or the entire framework works this way:

When the user clicks a link to a lesson, a JavaScript creates a HTML-page "on the fly" (Relevant parts of JavaScript below). This page contains the actual Applet, and a parameter saying witch lesson to load. The GIF-files for the lesson then loades, one by one. When all lesson-resources is loaded, the lesson is then started, and the "next" lesson pre-loades. Obviously, loading all GIF's for a lesson, and then for the next lesson into the computers memory is to much for PC's with low amounts of memory.

My questions is: How can I use .jar-files to preserve memory? (E.g. is it possible to download a .jar-file with the Applet, and then reading the GIF-files directly from the .jar, without having to 'expand' all GIF's to memory initially?) I would appreciate sample-code (both for the JavaScript and the Java-Applet) that shows how to read GIF-files from .jar-files.

Another question arises. When I load all GIF-files into memory at once, I do not have to use OffScreenImages to render the GIF-files (Obviousely, for low-end PC's, this would be prefered). However, if I want to read the GIF's from a .jar-file I would have to use OffScreenImages and then 'blitting' them onto screen when needed. How do I code this? Again, sample code would be nice.
