Use Runtime.exec() to execute DOS commands from Java.

by: TLTEOPosted on 2000-12-15 at 22:31:33ID: 24028

Sory, it shd be how to create an interactive mode bet the .exe program and my GUI.

haf way thru the program,
the DOS program might be asking:
C:\ PLs press ENTER to agree?

how to pass command in the middle of a program running

by: omry_yPosted on 2000-12-16 at 02:36:12ID: 24273

when you use Runtime.exec() you get an instance of Process back :

Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(your command);

now, you can use that process to get an output stream that will direct your output into the process input stream :

OutputStream out = process.getOutputStream();

now, whatever you write into that output stream, will go to your process (the DOS program).

by: TLTEOPosted on 2000-12-16 at 03:08:56ID: 24306

But this Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(your command);

can only send a command once??

If I wnat to answer a question in DOS, do I use that again.

Is there any way to make what appears in DOS to appear in our GUI and then answer the question and send back to DOS.

Effectivle, GUI represents DOS:

Cos ther program running in DOS will ask many questions which I can't put any in 1 command line.

first command line may be c:\abc.exe filename

DOS will promt c:\ is thsi the file (Y/N)?

and so on

by: omry_yPosted on 2000-12-16 at 03:14:42ID: 24312

Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(your command);

will start a process.
the rest of the comunication with the process is through the output stream to the process (to give it input), and through the input stream from the process (to find out whats going on there).

if your program really needs interaction, you will have to read the input from it, using process.getInputStream(), and parse it, or show it to your user to parse.

by: omry_yPosted on 2000-12-16 at 14:52:26ID: 25292

what you are trying to do is definitly not something for newbies...

what EXACTLY do you want the example to do?

by: TLTEOPosted on 2000-12-16 at 22:01:12ID: 25814

I need to pass the command ENTER  to DOS from GUI. i/o of having to press ENTER key in DOS thru the keyboard.

which means DOS says: is this the file (Y/N)?
where i will need to pree ENTER key

Can I do it in GUI instead?? press keyboard ENTER and it pass to this DOS line???

by: omry_yPosted on 2000-12-17 at 01:44:08ID: 26037

you can do it.
as I said, there are options.
the easy case is when you know your dos program will always need an enter when it runs.
the hard case, is that the input your dos program requires depend on its output.

what is the case with your program?

by: TLTEOPosted on 2000-12-17 at 09:12:33ID: 26615

I know the next command is ENTER. Basically press ENTER to confirm

Anyone can help??   How can I simulate a RETURN

I`ll give you an answer when I have time (in a couple of days)

by: omry_yPosted on 2000-12-19 at 14:50:50ID: 33339

generaly speaking, try to do :
Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("your program");
OutputStream out = p.getOutputStream();
out.write(13); // 13 is the ascii code for enter.

if that does not help, tell me.

by: TLTEOPosted on 2000-12-19 at 19:59:52ID: 33985

It is the same  still . seems stdOutput.write(13).  doesn't simulate a ENTER

by: TLTEOPosted on 2001-01-03 at 19:53:07ID: 78428

I still can't figure out how to do it.  Any help pls

this is how the DOS will work

c:\abc\abc.exe
c:\abc\key in the filename:_
c:\Is this the matching file [the other file]? :_

I can use runtime command for the first 2 case.

but the third one requires me to press RETURN, to indicate this is the default file.

I have tried  System.out.print("")  to indicate zero input.
still don't work ...   pls help

I contest the deletion.
my answer was pretty close..
in any case, here is a working example (working on my win2k):
it starts cmd.exe, than opens a frame with a text field.
anything you type in the text field is sent to the cmd when you press enter.
to a newbie, it will look like this example is "Threads free", but in fact in involves multi threading (AWT thread).
so reusing this example might not be too easy.
however, it does prove my point.

import java.io.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;

public class Test1
{

    public Test1()
    {
        try
        {

            OutputStream out = p.getOutputStream();
            final PrintStream pout = new PrintStream(out);
            InputStream in = p.getInputStream();
            int c;
            while((c = in.read()) != -1)
            {
                System.err.print((char)c);
                if(c=='>')
                {
                    Frame f = new Frame();
                    final TextField text = new TextField();
