Question

jtable imageicon

Asked by: ivanthepro

hi,

I have a jtable and I need to have a column with imageicons.

This is possible when I used this code:
data[][] = {{.......,new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("..."),.......}}

however when I tried this:
data[][] = .....new ImageIcon(new URL("http://......"))....
nothing appears and there is no exception caught.

Why is it so? How do I display an Image from a URL?
By the way, the URL is valid.

thanks
Ivan

Nothing appears?  I would have expected the toString() representation of the ImageIcon to be displayed.  If that is what is happening, you need to let the JTable now that the cells should be rendered as icons.

One way to do that is to modify the TableModel to return Icon.class when the getColumnClass() method is called for that column.  To do this, you would probably subclass DefaultTableModel and override that method.

You could also set the TableCellRenderer for the TableColumn object associated with that column.

> nothing appears and there is no exception caught.

hint: check ImageIcon size.

> is no exception caught.

ImageIcon constructor does not throw exceptions. if you want better control, you have to download the image data yourself

I checked the size, still there is no image viewable.

The URL is http://www.triviaplanet.com/study%20guide/maths_tips/quick-maths-pic.jpg

I tried another URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/asguru/generalstudies/maths/images/maths.gif

Still it didnt work. I did all the necessary steps, I did the getColumnClass method and everything else. It worked when I use a picture stored in my pc. If I tried to load a picture from the internet It wont work.

After that I tried to check the image height and width, it shows -1 and -1 respectively on the console.

if the size of the imageicon is too large, how do I make it viewable to the user? e.g. providing scrolling within a cell? Is it possible to resize the image?

see the comment above

use System.out.println() to print it in the console and try it inside your browser

What I am trying to do is to get an Object[][] from another class. This Object[][] will contain the values needed in the table except for one column. ok try this...
import java.net.*;
import javax.swing.*;

public class testing{
  public testing(){
    //compilable, but will take awhile to load and the size is -1,-1;
    ImageIcon ic = new ImageIcon(new URL("http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/asguru/generalstudies/maths/images/maths.gif");
    System.out.println("?"+ic.getIconHeight()+"?"+ic.getIconWidth());
  }
}

by: heyhey_Posted on 2002-12-28 at 01:39:13ID: 7638900

code posted below produces the following output

height: 168, width: 175

so there is nothing wrong with it.

what's next ?

********** code ************

import java.net.*;
import javax.swing.*;

public class testing
{
 public static void main(String args[])
 {
   try
   {
     //compilable, but will take awhile to load and the size is -1,-1;
     ImageIcon ic = new ImageIcon(new URL("http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/asguru/generalstudies/maths/images/maths.gif"));
     System.out.println("?"+ic.getIconHeight()+"?"+ic.getIconWidth());
   } catch (Throwable x)
   {
     x.printStackTrace();
   }
 }
}

by: heyhey_Posted on 2002-12-28 at 08:01:21ID: 7639495

the only possible explanation is that you are begind a proxy. does you browser use proxy ?

if yes - you have to configure your application to use that proxy. add the following code inside your main method

System.getProperties().put("proxySet", "true");
System.getProperties().put("proxyHost", "127.0.0.1");
System.getProperties().put("proxyPort", "81");

by: ivantheproPosted on 2002-12-30 at 06:44:34ID: 7645702

my browser uses a proxy, but I still cant get it working even though I tried your code...

>System.getProperties().put("proxySet", "true");
>System.getProperties().put("proxyHost", "127.0.0.1");
>System.getProperties().put("proxyPort", "81");

so whats wrong with it?

by: heyhey_Posted on 2003-01-01 at 01:58:10ID: 7651723

did you change the IP and port for your proxy ?

by: ivantheproPosted on 2003-01-01 at 06:46:30ID: 7651882

nono, i didnt do anything. btw, how do i get the ip dynamically during runtime?

by: ivantheproPosted on 2003-01-01 at 16:36:14ID: 7652870

how does this thing work?
lets say I do not know whether the client is using proxy, then how should I write my code?

by: heyhey_Posted on 2003-01-02 at 00:53:24ID: 7654517

> lets say I do not know whether the client is using proxy, then how should I write my code?

put a configuration dialog where user can enter his proxy parameters. the same way as all browsers work.
