I have application in which I am invoking System.gc(); but still it goes out of memory. So it seems that objects are not garbage collected because object is in use , is referred by some other objects.
Is there a way in java , how to find out that particular object 'X' is referred by how many other objects.
please give me api names or give me code.
Thanks

There is no way to determine this in Java code.
It sounds like you are trying to debug your application, rather than you need your application to be able to determine this. What you really need for that is a debugging tool that can trace object references.
Borland's Optimizeit will do this for you. You can find an object, what references exist referring to it, and what references exist referring to the objects that hold those references, etc. It will display the entire reference chain, allowing you to understand why your object is not being garbage collected.
Another tool that does the same thing is Sitraka's JProbe, although I have not used it. There may be others, but these are the two better known tools.
