The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Hmm, looks like homework.
Take a look at the javadoc for StringTokenizer and
Integer.

if it's always gonna be the same format (dd/mm/yyyy)

String myYear = dateJoined.substring(dateJoined.lastIndexOf("/") + 1);

int intYear;

try {
   intYear = Integer.parseInt(myYear);
} catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
   nfe.printStackTrace();
   intYear = 0;
}

return intYear;

Same solution as bobbit31 ....

public static int yearJoined(String dateString)
    {
        int i = dateString.lastIndexOf("/");
        String finalDate = dateString.substring(i+1).trim();
        int j = Integer.parseInt(finalDate);
        return j;
    }

The following is my answer:
// Date.java
......

// ParseDate.java

import Date;
/**
 * @author Jiabosc
 */
public class ParseDate {

      public static void main(String[] args) {
            Date date = new Date();

            String result[] = "1988/08/04".split("/");

            date.setYear(Integer.parseInt(result[0]));
            date.setMonth(Integer.parseInt(result[1]));
            date.setDay(Integer.parseInt(result[2]));

            System.out.println(
                  date.getYear() + "/" + date.getMonth() + "/" + date.getDay());
      }
}

u can return the year value of the Date using the Year method.
Syntax is Year(Date) will give u the year of the date.

Hi
Java Date, DateFormat eg, have a parse(String s) method to parse dates into a Date object. The class SimpleDateFormat
is the best in this case I think. The SimpleDateFormat.parse(String dt) returns a Date, where Date.getYear() (Deprecated),
returns the year you need.
see: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/i18n/format/simpleDateFormat.html

A good way of doing it is given below with an example of how to use it.
There are a few assumptions made:
1. the dates specified separate the month, day and year with the '/' character.
2. although the year and month can be in any order the year must come last.
Further the benefits of this version are that:
1. it's quite succinct
2. dates can be specified in either UK or US format.
3. it does not matter if the month or day are specified in two character format (eg 11) or both two and 1 character format (eg 2 and 02).
4. it does not matter how many characters are used in the year (eg 608 or 1999).

class SilverChairsHomework {

   public static void main(String[] args) {
      // an example test
      System.out.println(yearJoined("25/2/1999"));
   }

   private static int yearJoined(String date) {
      int lastSlash = date.lastIndexOf('/');
      return Integer.parseInt(date.substring(lastSlash + 1));
   }

}
