End-of-Stream Marker.

Hi;

Can a BufferedOutputStream that is streaming out over a Socket connection (which must remain open) and which cannot have its .close() method called, signal end-of-stream (-1) ?

Does .flush() send the end-of-stream marker, or is it only an explicit .close() that can do this? If so, how can the coressponding BuffredInputStream ever determine EOS? Can the BufferedOutputStream send its own explicit EOS, and, if so, if the stream is a byte stream, what is the grammar?
