Question

StaleConnectionException

Asked by: ssaluja

Hi I am using WAS 4.0.3(on Solaris) When i am trying to connect to a Datasource , it is getting connected. The log says got Connection. Then i am executing a query (which in Oracle takes 5-6 minutes). during the execution of this query from my JAVA application deployed on Websphere, I am getting StaleConnectionException. I increaed the connection time out to 1800 seconds and also checked  that database was up, but still it is giving the same exception.

This application is already deployed under same environment(WAS 4.0.3 on Solaris) and its is working fine.
Please help me out. This is an SOS

Thankz
Sanjay

And from the WebSphere FAQ:

http://www7b.software.ibm.com/wsdd/library/faq/ws40faq.html

"Q: Provide some information about connection pooling, such as stale connections.

A: Stale connections are those connections which for some reason can no longer be used. This can happen, for example, if the database server is momentarily shut down or if the network is experiencing problems. In all of these cases, the connections are no longer usable by the application and the connection pool needs to be flushed and rebuilt. This type of support was added in WebSphere 3.5.2, and is improved in WebSphere 4.0. More vendor-specific error codes have been added to the mapping that result in a StaleConnectionException. In addition, whenever a StaleConnectionException is thrown by WebSphere, the entire pool of connections will be destroyed."

Hehe...there's a quiz here too:

http://certcities.com/editorial/popquiz/story.asp?EditorialsID=43

In which Question 16 is:

------------------------------------

 16. A datasource has been created and configured (in WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Single Server Edition) to have an orphanTimeout of 30. A servlet acquires a connection from that datasource and holds the connection for 2 minutes without using it. If the servlet attempts to use the connection after that, which statement is true?

a. StaleConnectionException is thrown

b. Connection is reestablished automatically

c. PooledConnectionException is thrown

d. Connection is unaffected by the orphan timeout

--------------------------------------

Answers............

--------------------------------------

16. Choice A is correct. StaleConnectionException indicates that the connection currently being held is no longer valid. This can occur for numerous reasons, including:

    * The application fails to get a connection because of a problem such as the database not being started.
    * A connection is no longer usable because of a database failure. When an application tries to use a connection it previously obtained, the connection is no longer valid. In this case, all connections currently in use by the application may prompt this exception.
    * The application using the connection has already called close() and then tries to use the connection again.
    * The connection has been orphaned, and the application tries to use the orphaned connection.
    * The application tries to use a JDBC resource, such as Statement, obtained on a now-stale connection.

Any help to you?

No, I have seen your suggestions but my problem is that i am using the same application on same environment connecting to same database. The only difference is the WAS server. The no of records we are fetching is approx 8000 and the time the query takes is something like 6 minutes. So please tell me if any setting are required at WAS or may be at Database level. Since the no of records fetched is quite big do we need to make any changes in Oracle settings.

errr...this exception only occurs when using WAS...
