1. What Java VMs and versions are "usually" installed with the common browsers? Any observations on compatibility issues (I'm mainly using Swing, DOM4J, JGoodies' Looks), how compatible is Microsoft's VM? Apropos, will setting the <object codebase> attribute override the browser settings (not) to use MVM?
2. Where can I download the Java VM 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 versions?

You could use Htmlconverter to generate the appropriate html file to override the default VM used by the browser. Simply supply a html file using the <applet> tag with the desired attributes, and the Htmlconverter will generate the appropriate <object> and <embed> tags.

Does that mean I have to force the Sun VM 1.2+ to be installed in order to run Swing components?
- How can I do that (enforce a minimum version) if the browser is anything than Internet Explorer (and doesn't support the <object codebase> tag)?
- I also noticed Java 1.4.x requires a reboot in order to be installed on Windows. I'd really like my application to not being dependant on that (reboots). My goal is to provide a "browser-like" experience: Nothing extra to install, but if you wanted more features (like a good look), install the current Java version.

Not if you only want Swing. You can install just Swing with MS VM.
You do need plugin insttalled if you use 1.2 language features.

You can use the <applet> tag.

Didn't get added till 1.4, but all you do is just click start->run-> type in: Htmlconverter

Hmm.. Well I was re-reading that link I gave you.. May have spoke too soon about htmlconverter not being included. For some reason, it wasn't in the 1.3 jdk at school. The link seems to indicate it was around as early as 1.2 (maybe they didn't include it?? dunno).
Anyhow, found a couple more useful links - this first link is the most complete breakdown of browser compatibility i've found. It has some really cool tricks to sniff out default browser VM's in case you don't want to require a plug-in download:

Personally, I'd go with the plugin instead of the default brower VM.. If you're familiar with web programming, I don't have to tell you how difficult it can be to get things to look the same way in different browsers. In fact I'd just require a fairly recent version of the plug-in.. It will save your users bandwidth in the long run - you can do so much more with it. Not to mention, 60% of American households have broadband now( and it's not that big anyway ).
The flip side of that coin is the users who don't have administrative rights on their computer (playing games at work,school, etc). They wouldn't be able to run your applet if you require a newer plug-in than they have (if they have one at all).

A thorny subject! If you buy a machine now or have bought one in maybe the last year or so, it probably doesn't have *any* VM.

Why would you want earlier plugins/VMs?
