Password protecting a web directory with basic authentication not working...

I'm having trouble setting up basic password authentication on my server. I have one folder called "Protected" that I would like to have password protected. I really only need one login/user ID for it since I'm going to access the content by passing the username/password from a java servlet after I verify that the user is valid in a database that is also on the server. I've set up a .htaccess file in the "Protected" folder, and I've created a .htpasswd file that's located in the root directory. Here is how the .htaccess file looks:

AuthName protected password
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /localhost/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null

<Limit GET POST>
require user bananas
</Limit>

Here is how the .htpasswd looks:
