1.4 is newer, has more features and fixes.  packages like: Jaxp, NIO, Regular Expressions, many bug fixes.

The question you should be asking is whats the difference between 1.5 and 1.4 ;)

I think the major difference between 1.5 and 1.4 is generics....I never heard of it before but I remember reading somewhere that is suppose to be similar to templates in C++
