Is Java applet window open?

I have a java applet which, when the html page loads, opens the applet in a new separate pure-java window (not inline in the page).

I need to be able to know via javascript whether this java window has been closed by the user. When I attempt to hit any public method in the applet via js, or access any public props, and if the java window has been closed by the user, I get a nasty javascript error. So I need to detect whether the java window has been closed before attempting to hit methods or props.

I don't need to know the moment the window is closed (like an event), I just need my js to be able to detect at any point in time whether it has been closed already.
