jar a class with a runtime

Hello,
I have been using in my class files this code to initiate a runtime:

String cmd= "command.com /c .\\runme.bat";
try
{
Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
String s;
while ((s = br.readLine())!= null)
{
textarea1.append(s + "\n");
}
}
catch (Exception e){}

and it works fine for Win98se every time. But when I jar the classes with:

jar cmf manifest.mf mywork.jar *.class

the jar runs fine until the dos box closes and then mywork just hangs.
Any ideas?
