pass-by-value and pass-by-reference works in java?

In EJB1.0 we have only remote Interface

if client and server located on the same machine then EJB2.0 spec introduced local interfaces ;
here in this case Is objects passed pass-by-value or pass-by-reference?

How these pass-by-value and pass-by-reference works in java?

i know if we want to pass objects pass-by-reference we have to use serialization;

with serialization, objects converted into byte stream and send across the network.(marshalling and unmarshalling concept comes here);

i am assuming pass by value is like passing the value or methods in methods

like ex(String s)
{

}

am i correct ?please correct me
