The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to get the size of ResultSet (total number of rows)

Tags: resultset, size, get
Hi all, I’m trying to get the total number of rows return to a result set, aside from manually counting them using while(rs.next()) {count++}, I can’t find any other way, is there a function that will provide this, because let say I have 15,000 row then manually counting them would be pretty slow this plus fetching the data from the database, any help wound be appreciated.

did u try rs.getFetchSize()

01.29.2005 at 06:22AM PST, ID: 13171564
or use a query       SELECT model_num, COUNT(*) AS number_of_units
FROM appliance;

01.29.2005 at 06:48AM PST, ID: 13171673
You can use Select query as said above but if the records are not distinct then it will give the rowcount which has repeated values.

You can go for

while(rs.next())
  count++;

also you can test the distinct records in the while loop.

rs.getFetchSize() DOES NOT WORK! WHY?

while(rs.next())
  count++;        = is not good for 15,000 row

might try select count as a last soulution.

how come rsesultset interface don't have a function for the size of the row return, I'm really puzzled...

try this stupid method I created...its kind of a hack and if problem arise you have to set your database as scrollable or something like that...

public static int getResultSetSize(ResultSet resultSet) {
    int size = -1;

    try {
        resultSet.last();
        size = resultSet.getRow();
        resultSet.beforeFirst();
    } catch(SQLException e) {
        return size;
    }

    return size;
}

hope this helps...

> rs.getFetchSize() DOES NOT WORK! WHY?

Because its doesn't return the total number of rows
it returns the number of rows it fetches at a time.

> might try select count as a last soulution.

Only solution I'm aware of without first retrieving the entire result set.

> how come rsesultset interface don't have a function for the size of the row return

Because it doesn't knoiw how many rows will ultimately be returned from database

"Because it doesn't knoiw how many rows will ultimately be returned from database"

I see, come to think of it this could be true if and only if ResultSet doesn’t pre-fetch the entire result return from the database, meaning it does not load it to the memory and only by the “need to know basis”. Which sounds sensible since loading 15,000 records and loading them ALL up in one go may take some time. Thanks for the input.

Thats the same as looping thru the entire result set.

Try to execute the following query
select count(*) from device ;
it will gives the row count as result.
