Hibernate HQL still requires 'is null" in queries?

Tags: nvl, hql, hibernate
One thing that I always hated about SQL was that I always needed two versions of a query if one of the values needed to be tested against null. Yes, there is the nvl() function, but my understanding is that it's not very efficient to write queries with it and it requires an in-band value to be used which may not be possible in some cases.

I was disappointed that Hibernate continues this practice in HQL. Why must I create the following two versions of an HQL query? Or do I? Is there a way to write HQL such that it'll effectively combine the following two queries in a way that's no less efficient in terms of query execution speed?

QUERY #1 FOR WHEN objTypeId IS NULL:
      from com.knowlist.list.hh.UserPrivilege
      where
            unum=:unum
            and privId=:privId
            and objTypeId is null

QUERY #2 FOR WHEN objTypeId IS NOT NULL:
      from com.knowlist.list.hh.UserPrivilege
      where
            unum=:unum
            and privId=:privId
            and objTypeId = :objTypeId

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Hi,
I have the same issues. I mean executing nvl() in Hql is there any solution for keeping the functionality in HQL rather seeking for native SQL.

Kind reply is accepted...
With Regards
