>>   <option value="<%= rs.getObject("ID") %>"><%= rs.getObject("NAME") %></option>
I *think* something is wrong with the quotes here...

by: TimYatesPosted on 2005-10-20 at 07:28:19ID: 15124601

quotes look fine...

I'd guess you're not getting any data...

Try using lowercase:

      RowSetDynaClass resultSet = new RowSetDynaClass(rs, true);

then

   <option value="<%= rs.getObject("id") %>"><%= rs.getObject("name") %></option>

by: TimYatesPosted on 2005-10-20 at 07:29:14ID: 15124613

And make sure "SELECT ID,Name from employees" actually returns you results by running the query against the database from the console...

And, assuming id is an integer, and name is a String, use the correct getXXX methods:

   <option value="<%= rs.getInt( 1 ) %>"><%= rs.getString( 2 ) %></option>

...Actually...ignore my 1st comment about lowercase...  it's completely wrong :-/

TimYates,

The tabl lib displays the table, sad to say the combo doesn't...they are both querying the same table.

yes ID is int while Name is varchar, tried the method posted above, still no data is populating the combo box, how can we troubleshoot furthur?

Thanks.

Sounds like:

      RowSetDynaClass resultSet = new RowSetDynaClass(rs, false);

is reading the resultset into a wrapper, but not resetting the cursor on the resultset to that start...

Can you try adding the line:

      rs.beforeFirst() ;

after the

      request.setAttribute("results", resultSet);

line?

I meant:

is reading the resultset into a wrapper, but not resetting the resultset cursor back to the start...

I think the grammar bit of my brain just went wrong ;-)

TimYates,

You're simply Amazing!!!  there's a small issue I think it is because we are using the same recordset when we sort the tag lib (click the header) the combo also follows the sort order, i've tried to change/create another stmt
not sure if this is the right way to go...

Thanks

TimYates,

I think using the wrong approach populating the combo box using RowSetDynaClass
is there a better way to query?

The reason for using RowSetDynaClass is for the display tag lib..not sure if this is the right way for an object to be populated.

Thanks.

I would read all of your combo options into a List then, use this list to build up the Select...

Hmmm...  try (not compiled -- hope it works):

<%!
    // Define a class that will hold our id->name pairs for the select box...
    public class ComboItem
    {
        int id ;
        String name ;
        public ComboItem( int id, String name ) { this.id = id ; this.name = name ; }
    }
%>

<%
   Connection connection = null;
   Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver").newInstance();
   connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test","root","pass");     Statement stmt = connection.createStatement();
     ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT ID,Name from employees");
     RowSetDynaClass resultSet = new RowSetDynaClass(rs, false);
     rs.beforeFirst() ;

     // make a list for our id->name pairs:
     java.util.List selectData = new java.util.ArrayList() ;
     // Load the id->name pairs into a list
     while( rs.next() ) {
          selectData.add( new ComboItem( rs.getInt("ID"), rs.getString( "Name" ) ) ) ;
     }
     request.setAttribute("results", resultSet);
%>

<select name="combo">
<%
    // Fill the combo from our list :-)
    for( int i = 0 ; i < selectData.size() ; i++ )
    {
        ComboItem item = (ComboItem)selectData.get( i ) ;
%>
    <option value="<%= item.id %>"><%= item.name %></option>
<%
    }
%>
</select>
