Question

Graphical Representation of data - Using Java Swing

Asked by: hSindhu

Hello,

Good Day!

I would like to have a graphical representation(May be like a flow chart kind of representation) of data on my Java Swing form. I have a text file that has data of the format

1 -> 2 -> 5
2->4

I want to have a graphical represenation on the form something like. These graphical representations should be both expandable and collapsable.

Example on click of "1", "2" should be visible and on click of "2", "4" and "5" should be visible.

                                                                          | ----------|
                                                           |--------->|      4      |
                                                           |              |-----------|
| ----------|            | ----------|              |
|      1      | ------->|      2      | -------->|
|-----------|            |-----------|              |
                                                            |              | ----------|
                                                            |--------->|      5      |
                                                                           |-----------|

Kindly help me in getting some pointers or solution for this problem.

Thanks for the help.

Regards
H.Sindhu

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I would like to have graphical/diagramatic representation of data and not the tree view of the data. It should look more like the data (flow charts) that you see in MS-VISIO. To give some links where some diagramatic representations are provided

http://www.sourceinsight.com/features.html

Kindly let me know if you need information.

Thanks and Regards

One simple and doable solution here:

You can simply use gridlayout and draw rectange along with number in a panel in some grids as you want.
When user click one of panels, you control visibilities of other panels.

I'm sorry, but Russian is my native language and I have not time to translate this article to English. This example includes source code, and may be It is can help you.

At current time I'm working with eclipse SWT GUI java library.
And as for me there is a very good tool for your task, but this is not SWING.
For example you can read some articles:
http://eclipse.org/articles/Article-GEF-EMF/gef-emf.html
http://eclipse.org/articles/Article-Using%20EMF/using-emf.html
http://eclipse.org/articles/Article-GEF-diagram-editor/shape.html

End you can find flow diagram chart in EMF/GEF examples package too.
Best regards :)

This is the quick get arround with that but it doesnt have arrows you can add arrows by using labels and do like this
by adjusting the gridlayout and use setvisible(boolean) on the component:

Hello Javatm and Actonwang,

Thanks a lot for the response and support. The code that you have sent was abssolutely useful. But I heard that JApplet concept would be useful in getting better graphical views. Can you help me in getting pointers or code for JApplets and generating graphical views using JApplets?

Thanks!

by: oraelbisPosted on 2005-11-30 at 09:06:45ID: 15389751

There are many problems with applets.
Proxy server in our company block them as example.
J2EE more usefull in this case, but it is difficult to adopt your project to this technology.

Regards.
